Trick of the light

Probably the most interesting science related story I've stumbled upon recently was Wired's Harvard Physicist Plays Magician With the Speed of Light.

Lene Vestergaard Hau can stop a pulse of light in midflight, start it up again at 0.13 miles per hour, and then make it appear in a completely different location. "It's like a little magic trick," says Hau...

All I can say is just watch the videos at nature - Trick of the light. It is quite accessible, usually stuff like quantum mechanics goes past my head faster than the speed of light, but this I could kinda grock. Just amazing, beautiful science. And Lene Vestergaard Hau is an alpha geek indeed.

Of chimps and god and dice

I might be bored by this whole evolution vs design cold war going on in the promised land, but bored doesn't mean I'm not getting annoyed as well.

washingtonpost.com runs an evolution theory story. Although the research described makes a good point for evolution versus intelligent design, why should we care so much about it. Why these really heated debates?

In my opinion, the christian crowd should calm down. Nobody wants to stop them believing in God. Do it. Most atheists, humanists, and other assorted non-believers I know are happy with anyone having their personal beliefs, organised or otherwise. Just don't try to push them down our throats. Don't try to ban or censor thoughs different from yours. Get a life. Enjoy living, having a family or whatever else you like to do in life. Don't psyche yourselves up or you will really prove The Times true.

It is another matter, if you genuinely debate science, then really use arguments, and not statements. Is there a point in debating religion. Religion is about belief. The unconditional belief in the exhistence of God, not the possibility of exhistance. That's why I'm an atheist, I suppose. I don't believe in the mighty, nor have any need to. I don't believe in science either. I either check, or simply take the word for it of people whose opinion I trust, scientific theories.

"God doesn't play dice" Yet the quantum theory still stands. And the big E was right.
