Trick of the light

Probably the most interesting science related story I've stumbled upon recently was Wired's Harvard Physicist Plays Magician With the Speed of Light.

Lene Vestergaard Hau can stop a pulse of light in midflight, start it up again at 0.13 miles per hour, and then make it appear in a completely different location. "It's like a little magic trick," says Hau...

All I can say is just watch the videos at nature - Trick of the light. It is quite accessible, usually stuff like quantum mechanics goes past my head faster than the speed of light, but this I could kinda grock. Just amazing, beautiful science. And Lene Vestergaard Hau is an alpha geek indeed.

TAI-CHI - touch sensitive chipboards

[[http://www.taichi.cf.ac.uk|TAI-CHI]] is an interesting project some colleagues of mine work on together with a few interesting partners. The guys are turning various surfaces into touch, probably better described as tap sensitive, interfaces.

In it's basic form it is a few pieso-sensors, some low cost chips and lightweight software to grab the coordinates on a pre-calibrated surface. The calibration process is not too different from what you would do to calibrate a PDA's screen. Essentially it is not really high-tech, as in multi-million, cluster driven, intelligent multi-mobile-agent networks over-engineered gizmo.

The tech was tested not only on flat surfaces, but on staircase railings and other not so usual places.

We were dreaming about, gesture recognition and other cool derivatives of the technology. But that's hopefully the future

And it appeared on boing-boing

Kilnaboy

If you haven't heard Kilnaboy play, and let's face it, most of you haven't, try and do it. Get on the bus, train, walk, crawl, whatever just do it. It's worth it. I never thought that folk can make so much racket and actually be enjoyable. Well, the guys have the passion and the energy to pull it off and enjoy themselves at the same time.

What on earth

That's right. What on earth should one do to be lucky. In real life that is. In the ether it is a different story. I tried geeks. Doesn't work, really - I'm in the wrong place I suppose. The non-geek crowd, although they won't inherit the earth, are all-right. But I think I'm considered a vampire or something. Must be an associations with my name :) My goth is a popular scary passtime it seems.

It might be that I'm just a weirdo. Fair enough if it is true. But it seems that I'm not lucky. I meet with really interesting people. They don't mind my eating or drinking habits. They don't mind, though might not be clued up exactly, my though patterns, interests, ideas... It's just that the women I meet and would love to date are not free.

We'll See What We Can Do

Two odd buttons in a kitchen drawer. Two sore losers in a no-score draw. Two old batteries that have no use - me and you. We'll see what we can do.
We'll See What We Can Do - The MJ Hibbett & The Validators

Great! Geek punk! These lyrics describe my ideal date. Two old batteries that have no use! or even better

We are the anti-socials, we are the non-league hopefuls.

What else can you say. Discussing in #drupal how to pull chicks using it?
